Srimad Bhagavatham 8th Canto – Chapter18th describes the glories
of Lord Vishnu’s fifth incarnation as Vamana (Dwarf).
King
Mahabali, Grandson of Prahlada performed many sacrifices and acquired powerful
weapons and won over the deities. As a result the three worlds became
under the custody of King Mahabali. Lord Indra approached his mother
Aditi and informed her about the pathetic state of the deities. Aditi, a
dutiful wife reported the deplorable condition of her son and the deities to
her husband Sage Kashyapa. In order to save the world from the hands of
demon King Mahabali, the couple underwent severe austerities known as
Payovratha. Lord Vishnu pleased at the devotion of Sage Kashyapa and
Aditi. Lord Vishnu promised the couple that He would be born as child to
them. Aditi gave birth to a beautiful child on a Sravan Dwadashi.
The child assumed the form of a Dwarf and he was named as ‘Vamana’. The
whole Universe, Rishis, Sages and all the deities were enthralled at the
appearance of Lord Vishnu as ‘Vamana’, divine child to Sage Kashyapa and Aditi.
Hence, Sravan Dwadashi is celebrated as ‘Vamana Jayanti’/Vamana Dwadashi
– birth of Sri Vamana.
