Thiruperumthurai is one of the 275 Shiva Kshetram known for Thevara Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam situated in Thiruperumthurai, Pudukottai District.  This temple is located just 40 kms from Pudukottai and it is 8 miles from Aranthangi Railway station, Pudukottai.   This temple is well known for its exceptional craftsmanship and its architectural and sculptural work.  The grandeur of Kanaka Sabai of Lord with granite roofing and outstanding art works are the added attractions of this temple.  In this temple worship of Lord Shiva and daily rituals are performed to a raised platform covered with copper plate situated in the sanctum sanctorum.   There is no Dwajasthambam, Lord Nandikeshwara or Lord Chandikeshwara present unlike the other temples.  This is the temple where Saint Manikkavasagar received Pranavopadesham from Lord and attained Samadhi.

The legened has that Saint Manikkavasagar (Thiruvadhavoorar) who was a minister in the assembly of King Harimardhana Pandya.  Manikkavasagar arrived Thiruperunthurai as assigned by the King with sufficient gold coins to buy horses from Arabs.  He was fasicinated by the performance of Veda Padasala situated nearby his place of stay.  He was completely absorbed in chanting of Vedic hymns by the disciples and the captivating appearance of Guru as Lord himself.  He absolutely forgot his mission and remained one amongst them.  He continued to learn the sacred Hymns of Lord with utmost devotion and faith.  Manikkavasagar realized the presence of Lord in his Guru and built a temple to worship with the gold coins which were offered by the King to buy Arabian horses. Later, King Harimardhana Pandyan provided abundance of contributions to build the spectacular structure of this temple.
