Thiru Kotpuli
Nayanar was born in Thirunattiyathankudi.
He was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva and an honorable commander-in-chief
in the army of Chola King. He utilized
all his income for the service of Lord and his devotees. He made a practice of procuring adequate
grains for the offering to Lord with the income he had earned. In this way, he carried out his noble service
to Lord.
Once, Thiru
Kotpuliyar had to move out of his town as he was assigned with an important
military task. Before leaving the town,
he handed over sufficient sacks of grains to his relatives with a strict
instruction to carry out the service to Lord without any impediments in his
absence. There was a severe famine and drought
affected the life of the people in this town.
The relatives of Thiru Kotpuliyar’s were in dilemma whether to make use
of the grains provided or not. They
found no other means to conciliate their hunger. Finally, they had to utilize the grains
provided by Thiru Kotpuliyar. Thiru
Kotpuliyar returned from his duty and realized that the grains provided were used
by his relatives. He was totally
distressed by the action of his relatives, decided to punish them for the sin
they have committed and he mercilessly killed all of them. Lord was pleased at the sternness and
sincerity of Thiru Kotpuliyar and appeared before him. Lord Shiva with his consort Goddess Sri
Parvati blessed him with salvation for his noble service and also provided
liberation for the relatives who were died at this incident.
In the Tamil
month Adi – Kettai is widely celebrated as Guru Puja Day of Thiru Kotpuli
Nayanar, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
